What Are The Teachers’ Law Institutes?
BC Teachers’ Law Institutes provide teachers with exceptional professional development for learning about the law and having a dialogue and exchange of ideas with speakers from the legal system. The Institutes are held on district wide professional days and will offer full-day programs. The Teachers’ Law Institutes have been developed by the Justice Education Society of BC and generously sponsored by The Law Foundation of BC.
The 2009 Institutes will take place at six locations in British Columbia. Session agendas include such topics as: forensic science; crime scene investigation and expert evidence; DNA in landmark cases; mental illness as it relates to crime and the law; restorative justice in schools; Coroner’s Court; and the interpretation and application of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Teachers’ Law Institutes particularly benefit BC educators teaching Civics 11, Social Studies 11 and Law 12. Topics have been selected on the basis of regional interests and concerns. The planning and hosting of the institutes was done with the help of advisory committees composed of lawyers, teachers and JES regional coordinators.
